This male cardinal always stands watch over the bird feeder from this particular bush. His wife is never far away. The cardinals and the bluebirds are aggressive contenders for bird feeder dominance, although not warlike. The smaller birds prefer to wait their turn. All bets are off though when the pileated woodpecker arrives.

Last year was the first time there was a pair of cardinals that overwintered around our yard- that flash of red always makes my heart jump when he appears-what a great capture of that colour -I like that you call her his “wife” 🙂
