Tiny Wildflowers of Spring

Week 18: Weight or Mass

These tiny spring flowers are wispy and fragile, but tenacious and strong in their appearance in the woods each year. I’m going for light as a feather.

Week 17: Balanced (Accidental Renaissance)

Glade Stream

The challenge this week was to shoot a photo in the “Accidental Renaissance” style. I had to look it up. The Golden Ratio is supposed to be involved, but not being anything close to a mathematician, I had to guess at the balance in my composition. There are no Fibonacci spirals in this photo, which was one option. The other uses extremes of light and dark and a bit of soft focus to place the elements of the photo in several non-equal rectangles. I got the light, dark, and soft focus, but I think the balance between my large and smaller (use your imagination) rectangles might be a bit off. I didn’t do the math.

Week 14: Center Frame Portrait

The assignment this week was to take a center-framed portrait shot that isolates the subject and exhibits loneliness. What to do, what to do. I’m not really a portrait photographer, nor do I especially enjoy taking portrait photos. I’m also not inclined to be a voyeur of people when traveling around with my camera. So I came up with this: the bewildered, serious tree in the midst of a profusion of happy daffodils. The “how did this happen” shot. Oh well…

Week 13: New Beginnings

For me, spring always represents new beginnings–almost in every direction. Each year I look forward to the first blooms of the profusion of daffodils in my yard. They always usher in the rest of the springtime flowers.

Week 12: Trash

I have to admit, I wasn’t motivated this week. The word “trash” evokes a negative reaction in me and I couldn’t think of a way to portray the topic in a way that I would enjoy. But then I went for a walk and realized that nature also has trash and that it handles its recycling in a very positive way. Decomposition! The fallen tree here is being carried in a funeral procession by live tree pallbears on its journey back into the soil.

Week 11: Fill the Frame (with one color)

Very challenging as everything you look at is made up of many colors, even those things that seem like only one color. I took some closeups that were contenders for this week’s challenge, but kept coming back to this image of winter’s coloration of brown on brown on brown.

Week 10: Hometown

The town where I have lived for 18 years was founded in the mid-60s as one of three planned communities. Today, it has grown quite a bit from the original days, but still retains some of its old charm in the oldest neighborhoods. Here is one of the first mixed use plazas from the old days, with its founder still keeping watch and enjoying the view.
